CITY SECTION ROUNDUP : TAFT TROUNCES FAIRFAX.(SPORTS) - Daily News (Los Angeles, CA)

Byline: Daily News

Quarterback Nick DiPadova was streaky Friday night for Taft High School. He started the game completing his first five passes and then was good on just one of his next seven efforts.

It didn't make one bit of difference as DiPadova's completions were far more devastating than his misses as the No. 4-ranked Toreadors routed Fairfax 51-0 in a nonleague game at Taft.

DiPadova finished the night with 201 yards, completing 12 of 25 attempts with three touchdowns as Taft improved to 2-0.

Fairfax, which managed just 47 yards in total offense, fell to 0-2.

DiPadova completed a 27-yard pass to Damon Coleman on the game's first play and Sedric Hurns followed with a 19-yard touchdown run as the Toreadors moved the ball up and down the field at will.

Coleman finished with 98 yards on six receptions, including touchdown catches of 10, 41 and 31 yards.

Hurns was equally impressive, running for 134 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Taft finished with 411 yards in offense.

Fairfax stumbled routinely on offense. The Lions turned the ball over three times and had one run stopped in the end zone for a safety. Taft linebacker Donte Morgan had three sacks.

Birmingham 21, University 14: The Braves (1-1) escaped with a victory when Warriors quarterback Nick Theodosiadis' pass to Stevenne Smith fell short on fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line with 48 seconds to play.

Birmingham running back Emmanuel Evans had 27 carries for 148 yards and scored on two 1-yard plunges. Evans also threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Demetrus Patterson on a fake punt in the first quarter to put the Braves up 13-0.

The Warriors (1-1) got their first touchdown on a 60-yard punt return by Mitchell Fitzhugh to close the gap to 13-6 at the half. Fitzhugh also had an 80-yard touchdown run that would have tied the score called back at 4:37 of the third quarter.

After Evans ran for his second 1-yard score, University's Harold Stephens ran in a 5-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 21-14 after the two-point conversion. He finished with 64 yards on 12 carries.

Birmingham quarterback Scott Doherty was 2 of 13 for 17 yards and threw an interception. He was 0 for 6 in the second half.

Evans, in addition to having a hand in all three touchdowns, punted six times for 216 yards.

Marshall 11, Grant 0: The host Lancers were frustrated with 6:46 to play when an 80-yard touchdown pass from Lawrence Monroy to Miguel Chavez was called back because of a holding penalty.

On the next play, Monroy was intercepted by Carlos Orozco, setting up a 29-yard Walter Hernandez field goal that secured the nonleague win for the Barristers (1-1) at Monroe High School.

The Lancers (0-2) had minus-24 yards rushing.

Marshall's Vince Vegara had a 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. After Jesse Prichard hit Hernandez for the two-point conversion, the Barristers had an 8-0 halftime lead.

Oscar Rivera led Marshall's ball-control offense with 124 yards rushing on 22 carries. The only bright spot for the Lancers was Monroy, who completed 16 of 22 for 151 yards. Chavez caught seven passes for 93 yards.

Monroe 30, Wilson 25: For the second straight week the visiting Vikings' (2-0) running attack produced two 100-yard rushers. Vinny Walker carried a majority of the load, rushing for 176 yards on 31 carries, with George Garcia adding 111 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.

The lead changed hands several times. The Mules scored quickly with a 58-yard reverse by Brandon Clay on the first play from scrimmage. Monroe scored later in the first quarter on a 31-yard run by George Garcia.

Dewayne Rose may have supplied the boost which put Monroe over the top, contributing with key plays on defense and special teams. He had a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown and recovered a muffed punt on the 2-yard line, running it back for 47 yards.

Wilson's offense was led by quarterback Julio Briones, who was 8 of 28 for 163 yards. He also rushed for 28 yards on eight carries. Wilson completed two big passes for touchdowns in the second half: a 42-yard strike to Eric Wagner and a 53-yard pass to Carlos Diaz, which gave Wilson back the lead early in the fourth quarter.

The lead changed hands for the last time when Monroe quarterback Willie Alaimo (5 of 11 for 46 yards) scored the winning touchdown on an 18-yard run with 5:46 remaining in the game. The Mules were able to drive to the 23-yard line, but lost the ball on downs after Briones failed to connect on four straight passes.

Crenshaw 34, Poly 14: The Cougars dominated with a three-back attack, and Damon Rogers led the way with 152 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns in a nonleague game at Poly.

Sophomore running back Mike Culpepper had eight carries for 67 yards and sophomore running back Justin Crenshaw had seven carries for 42 yards.

Poly (0-2) stayed close in the first half, but a goal-line stand by Crenshaw (2-0) with a 1:00 remaining in the first half set the table for the second half, in which Cougars dominated. Crenshaw rushed for 265 yards.
